New Music for 'Avatar: The Way Of Water' released by The Weeknd

On December 16th, the screen will turn blue again as we are welcomed back to the mythical world of Pandora in James Cameron's highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. 13 years after our introduction to this wonderful otherworldly land, moviegoers around the world have the chance to see the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time, internationally at least. What will happen in this long-delayed sequel remains a mystery, even as the days for the mid-December release of

draw closer. We now know via The Weeknd's Twitter account that this hugely expensive sequel will feature a new song by the chart-topping Canadian singer. But like the film itself, we only get a glimpse of what to expect.

That's okay though, thankfully we don't have to wait long

The tweet simply reads "12.16.22" while we get a dramatic reveal of the sequel's logo, along with a few seconds of the tune. It's a choral track filled with battle drums underlining the huge "A" that fills the frame.

If you want to know more about what this music will contain, unfortunately you're out of luck. Those looking for more details on the R&B musician's contribution to Avatar: The Way of Water will have to wait patiently until the film gets closer, but we should learn more about the mysterious song in due course.

During Avatar From 2009's spectacle galore, along with an imaginative and spectacular score by the late James Horner, the film isn't exactly known for its hit singles. It didn't inspire any songs to appear in the top 40 tracks, which is quite remarkable compared to Celine Dion's iconic rendition of Titanic's "My Heart Will Go On," which became an enduring radio mainstay. Of course, there's no guarantee that whatever The Weeknd produces for this new film will carry the same cinematic and pop culture legacy, but at least it's in the right company.

You're not betting against Cameron, and if this film becomes the same breakout hit (no pun intended) as his previous two films, it could further legitimize The Weeknd as one of our headliners. But as we've said before, and we'll probably say it again, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

This is certainly not the first time The Weeknd has contributed to a film soundtrack. Most notably, he was nominated for an Oscar for his single Earned It, which was featured in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Also, The Weeknd is the artist behind "Devil MayCry" which was featured on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Despite the high-profile releases of these titles, Avatar: The Way of Water might eclipse them, but that's assuming this sequel has the same status and success as its predecessor. At this point, even Cameron doesn't know how well this film will compare to his previous two films.

But if there's any sound advice in Hollywood, it's that audiences should bet against James Cameron. Thankfully, The Weeknd is following that advice and then some, and we'll soon get to hear this new tune.

As the musician notes in his original tweet, Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere in theaters worldwide on December 16th.
